Future plans

Future plans...

Thinking back on Gencon 2014, one of the best parts was the cosplay. There were people dressed in all sorts of outfits - sci-fi, super hero, video games - you name it. A recurring theme was Steampunk, and on the last day we even saw a Steampunk Han & Chewie.

One of the first things we saw was a wonderful Vader costume. He proceeded to Force Choke Vanessa... :-)

Even Vanessa got into the action with her ears and tail -

Fast forward to a few weeks ago... Vanessa and I attended the Jackson Comic Con. Had a great time - saw some WONDERFUL cosplay, especially in the Star Wars theme.

They had other things as well, like several movie cars. This one was actually outside -

And then there were other 'props' that were on display...

I was particularly impressed with this lady's makeup and costume and the custom crafted saber she held!

There was a booth in Jackson that had some 'cosplay guns' for sale. We noticed they were nerf and water guns and decided we could do that...

The next weekend we went to Memphis Comic Con and saw more of the same! So we decided to check out Goodwill the next time we were in Jackson. We found the following items and the total price for ALL of it was less than seven dollars!

Brought them all home - cleaned them up good - and as far as 'future plans' go they will be sanded & painted and 'sci-fi'd up' & steampunkified up for cosplay. Very exciting. :-)

And yes, I will publish work in progress pics... I bought some 'star washers' today on a plumbing run to Lowe's to help with the work...

Post Birthday

Now I can talk publicly about the party yesterday. :-) It was Vanessa's 50th birthday and I had wanted to give her a surprise party. Our friend Hope had wanted to help, so she supplied the decorations and the cake. Another friend Heather wanted to help as well so she took care of the snacks and agreed to help decorate. Another friend Lisa was there early so she helped with last minute decorations. Thank you - ALL THREE of you! - for a wonderful job.

Angela was not able to attend but brought cupcakes, which were GONE in no time. :-)

But the biggest thank you of all was to the MANY wonderful friends that took time out to come and help celebrate and show Vanessa just how much she is loved. It touched her heart, I know, but it also touched mine! There are some special friends that were, due to last minute sickness or other issues, unable to attend, and we both understand that completely! NO hard feelings at all.

To the special friends from pretty far out of town that meant their round trip travel was as long or longer than the party was planned for, that touched my heart in a completely different and special way. THANK YOU! Some even stayed around after and we had a very nice dinner at Applebees with a table full. And then, of course, the talking into the later evening on the parking lot.

A truly wonderful day!

Cracker Barral

I'm sitting across the table from the birthday girl! Yep, Vanessa is growing more beautiful and precious by the day, even on her birthday!

Yesterday was a rough one, so I didn't get a post made. We buried a dear friend and it hit me pretty hard - worse than I thought it would.

There are people we lose that we notice are gone and then there are the ones we actively miss. The latter I can count on one hand, and Max is definitely on that hand. Make it the right hand with ginger picks - or the left hand and we'll lick the slide. :-)

I did work on some lyrics the night before. No, I didn't complete a song, but I did work on an idea that Vanessa had for one sometime back. If music is a muscle then writing is too, and I flexed it a little.

Well - breakfast is over and it's time to take care of some errands... Vanessa knows we have a reservation at 3 so Wally World here we come...

Back in the swing of things...

Okay, I'm way WAY behind on blogging. This will just not do. :-)

This blog is a place to save my thoughts, yes, but I also find it's a place to spur on more and more writing. It's been just too long since I've written a song, and that has to change.

So - what's on my mind right now? Well, some guys on a Yahoo Group have gotten a little butt hurt, and it's made me chuckle. :-)

Just had a long weekend but it turned into a doctor visit and staying in bed for the whole thing. Not fun. Vanessa and I did have a VERY nice away trip to Nashville, though, and we're looking forward to going back in March!

And, on a down note, a dear old friend of the family and the BEST steel guitar player I have ever shared a stage with passed away. RIP Max Winchester - we love you and you will be missed!

Greenman Designs Review

Last year I bought into this Kickstarter - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/586885235/dynamic-colored-x-wing-attack-wing-template-sets

This was a campaign run by Josh Greenman of Greenman Designs - http://www.gdesignsinc.com

I had wanted to get acrylic maneuver templates and tokens and was THIS close to buying from another company when I heard about this campaign. I was so impressed with the look of it that I immediately jumped in. Then I saw the price, but Vanessa said, "it's almost your birthday - go for it!"

Well, yesterday it came in! I had promised some pics for the others that are waiting and decided to go ahead and do a full review.

First impressions - WOW - I had heard that Greenman Acrylics were the best around and I am NOT disappointed! The kickstarter campaign was indeed a VERY long wait, but it was WELL worth it! I am so impressed with the product that once this kickstarter is over and he is taking regular orders again I WILL be ordering more!

First up are stress tokens. In full disclosure for an objective review, I've included what might be an error. The one on the left is the KS Backer version that came with this campaign. The one beside it doesn't have the paint in the middle. The next one has the center cut out. Only a couple were like this and I don't know if it was on purpose or not, but I actually like the design! Next is the original cardboard token and last is a 3D printers one that I painted (I printed a few a couple of weeks ago).

Next up, Shield Tokens. One the left is the original cardboard (well worn, of course). Really excited to get these to the table!

On the left is the cardboard Ion Token - middle is the Greenman version - on the right is the Greenman Energy Token for epic play (I didn't grab a cardboard to compare with as I don't keep epic tokens with my other tokens. :-)

On the left is the Kickstarter custom Greenman - in the middles is the original cardboard - on the right is the FFG one from the prize support.

Sorry about this pic... The lighting is not good and it is a little blurry, but the tokens on the left are WONDERFUL! The blue is a nice contrast to the green evade. On the left is the Greenman. Next is the same thing but 'cut out.' Looks really cool! Then the original cardboard and finally a 3D printed and painted one I did.

Critical hit tokens - the original cardboard and then four designs from Greenman - single explosion and tripled explosion - both solid and 'cutout.'

These are reinforce tokens - some are cutout and some are not (again, no original comparison as I don't keep epic tokens with my others).

Not Greenman, but something I'm gonna send to him... I've started making 'chance cubes' (great for when you have to randomly determine initiative and other 50/50 things). The one on the left is a little different design I'm working on. The idea was to LOOK home made and not 'professional' so that when it's worn a little it will look more like Watto carries...

My personal gift back to Josh for his great work. :-) I also sell these, if anyone is interested.

These are some VERY interesting tokens! You can use these for marking crits as well as use of things. There were two of each of these - Agility +1 token, attack dice -1 token, all turns red, elite pilot skill used, another token showing pilot (maybe for once a round pilot abilities?), astromech token & 0 PS token.

There were four of the items on the left. These are used to mark the position of a ship on the board. Also shown are one of the ship markers from each faction. These are designed to go in the bases with a matching number on the pilot card.

Included were full color asteroids and debris. As soon as he has them available, I will be buying the ones to replace the ones in the new core set. Shown are two of the originals and their acrylic replacements.

This is too blurry - sorry - I was trying to show how much thicker the acrylic asteroids are. They also have the non slip backing.

Just to show that the sizes are IDENTICAL so these are great replacements.

Target Locks - on the left is one I found a pattern for and 3D printed. Next is the 'insert' from these (planned to use them as yet another TL). Next is the original cardboard. After that is the rebel version, then 'free standing' rebel, imperial and scum. They snap into the bases, so these can be used as 'traditional' lay down TL's too.

Bomb tokens, alongside the original cardboard versions.

On the left are two 'firing arc' templates. One just slips on the front of the ship base and shows the firing arc - the other has a place to slip the range ruler. Now that I use a laser I don't know how much use they will get, but they are cool looking. The bigger item is a barrel roll template. It is designed to allow you to place beside a small base ship and shows the maximum forward and reverse barrel roll positions.

The heart of the kickstarter, and the reason I originally jumped on board! These are the FINE movement templates and range rulers. The quality, the look and the feel are all TOP NOTCH! They include non slip backing and the colors really jump out! I went with the option to have my name engraved on them as well. :-) Can't wait to get these on the table!

The epic ruler is magnetic! :-)

Damage deck holder - came in five pieces and most of the 'tabs' broke off when I started to assemble. I was a little disappointed at first, but realized everything holds together just fine once it is assembled, plus now that I use foam cases I plan to make a spot to hold it and just glue it together. Even though some of the little pieces broke off it's still functional and still looks good.

Not sure how legal these will be for tournament play, so I'll make sure to have the original copies handy 'just in case,' but I must say I am VERY impressed with these ship bases and acrylic movement dials! They are magnetic but also 'spin' very well. :-) I plan to order more - not everything, but at least what I intend to run in tourneys.

Three small base cards and their corresponding dials.

Several dials stacked together. :-)

These are the non slip inserts for the bases. I glued most of them on yesterday (a little super glue holds them in place, but I ran out of glue). I got plenty of small bases and four large base. That's enough for normal play, but since I've started painting my bases different colors I want to pick up a few more.

And lastly, here is the cloak token. Shown is the original cardboard, the official FFG prize support one and two Greenman. One is shown with the painted center and one with the 'cutout' center. I'm not sure if Josh was working on an alternate design or what, but I'm glad I wound up with different 'versions.' :-)

memories

We just had our 29th Anniversary last Saturday. We took a trip to Gatlinburg and made it into a belated honeymoon of sorts.

We stayed at a one bedroom - VERY private - VERY secluded chalet UP the mountain on the edge of the National Park. We made memories as well as talking about old ones.

Here's the pic we did - a traditional honeymoon 'old time photo' thing -

Now for what prompted this post (other than I've fallen behind again on getting my blog posts regular)...

Following is a screen shot of a geocache that we did in Arkansas. That was another day for making memories! We enjoy our road trips together and we used to do a lot of 'caching -

The page is at http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC1ARRA_grandpas-challenge?guid=84935e4e-058b-4e29-9d15-6ef3b22d60d0 if you're interested. The cache has been archived, but it doesn't kill our memories. :-)

Here are the pics that we had attached - when I saw these this is what made me smile. :-)

I miss those days - but I miss the road trips and spending time together, not just the geocaching. :-)

Love you babe!!!

just a little ketchup

Or catch up. :-)

Been a couple of weeks since I posted... I promised myself (and you) I would post more, and I'm sorry I have not. Been some 'personal issues' going on that have taken my attention... I will say that I have grown as a person, and as a spouse, because of it, and there's a new song coming soon... :-) Yes, Robert, it's a happy song! It's a love song and no one dies. ;-)

I've played the Farmers Market a few times, but skipped yesterday because of the heat! WHEW! Have been some GREAT crowds there and I've really enjoyed it! I'm still playing in Henderson on Saturday nights and was so VERY excited last week when Vanessa got to join me! Not only did I pass the bass off a couple of times so she and I could dance but I also got her on stage for three songs. And did the crowd ever love it! :-)

Here's a pic from last night...

The reason Vanessa has not been able to go is because she's been chasing HER dream! She's been working more and more hours in the EMS world. I know she's probably tired of hearing me say this, but I am very VERY proud of her selfless way of giving to those in need!

I started a Patreon page today for my songwriting and as a way of collecting funds for the next CD project... It's not live yet, though, as I'm still tweaking it. Vanessa is sleeping finally after working 48 hours straight, so I'm waiting to let her see it and help me make changes...

I did make the Patreon for the Car Wars PBEM live, if you'd like to check into that...

https://www.patreon.com/madhat

I won't be at the dance next week as I'll be at the Spry-Anderson Family Reunion in Paris, TN. Looking forward to defending the Rook Championship title with my partner Vanessa. :-) Yes, Rook is the family game and yes we play a tourney at the reunion each year. :-)

The next Saturday night I'll be performing in Union City at Discovery Park! I'm actually going to be there twice in August but that first Saturday night will be my first time there! Looking forward to meeting the people that come through there...

That's all for now! Take care of yourself and hug the ones you love! Tell them - nay - SHOW them you love them!
